Clement | | | | | 41st Governor of Tennessee, Gifted Orator, First Southern Governor to Veto a Segregation Bill Inducting Institution: Cumberland University Frank G. Clement was born on June 2, 1920 in the hotel his family owned and operated in Dickson, Tennessee. Raised with modest resources, his parents put an emphasis on education. At 16 years old, Clement told his friends, "I'm going to be governor of Tennessee," and he worked tirelessly to accomplish his goal. He became interested in public speaking at the suggestion of his aunt, who embraced her role as Clement's speech teacher. Clement grew into one of the most effective orators in the country. His speaking ability, passion for politics, and dedication to helping people of all races, religions, or creeds got him elected governor in 1952 at the age of 32. The 1953 convention changed the term of office from two years to four years with no succession permitted. Clement was reelected in 1954 by one of the most sweeping victories in Tennessee history and served until 1959. Clement ran for governor again in 1962 and won, serving another four-year term from 1963 to 1967. |
