Yolande Cornelia “Nikki” Giovanni embodies Fisk University’s motto of “Her Sons and Daughters are Ever on the Altar.” Giovanni remains committed to the fight for civil rights and equality. 

Giovanni is considered one of America’s foremost and widely-read American poets. With over three decades of publishing and lecturing, she earned the title of Oprah Winfrey's “Living Legends”. Giovanni is the recipient of over 25 honorary degrees, one of which she received from Fisk University in 1988.
