Howell E. Jackson exemplified the meaning of Cumberland University’s vision statement “to lead an impactful life” throughout his decades of service to our state and country. He served as a representative in the Tennessee House, United States Senator, Sixth Circuit Court, Sixth Circuit Court of Appeals, and as a United States Supreme Court Associate Justice.

Jackson earned his law degree from the Cumberland Law School in 1856 and established his practice in Jackson and then later in Memphis.
