David Levering Lewis exemplifies Fisk University graduates who have immersed themselves in their professions and set high standards with their accomplishments. He is a scholar that serves as a shining example of a product of strong liberal arts education. 

Lewis is a two-time Pulitzer Prize-winner and is the author of a two-volume life-and-times of W.E.B. DuBois. He is the first author to win two Pulitzer Prizes for biography for back-to-back volumes. 

After his time at Fisk University, Lewis went on to be the author of eight books and editor of two more. Professor Lewis concentrates on comparative history with special focus on twentieth-century United States social history and civil rights.
