Unveils 5th Annual TICUA Hall of Fame Inductees

Leaders in Civic Engagement, Education, and the Arts are Among the 2024 Honorees 

NASHVILLE, TN – The Tennessee Independent Colleges and Universities Association (TICUA) is proud to announce the latest class of its annual Hall of Fame. The 2024 inductees are a diverse group of individuals whose work has made a lasting impact in Tennessee and worldwide.

This year’s class features Tennessee trailblazers from various sectors, including a prominent legal architect of the civil rights movement, pioneers in banking and finance, and leaders in the arts and healthcare. These individuals have built lasting legacies through their leadership, philanthropy, and dedicated service to their communities.

Each year, alumni are inducted into the Hall of Fame by their institutions to honor their achievements and showcase how a foundation in higher education from Tennessee’s private institutions shapes global leaders. These 23 honorees represent a variety of professions, but all share a common commitment to making a difference.

“As we welcome this new class of honorees, it’s inspiring to see the diverse ways TICUA institution alumni are shaping the world. Our Hall of Fame honorees have led exemplary lives of character and service and are well-deserving of recognition,” said TICUA President Dr. Cameron Conn. “Each inductee’s story underscores the profound impact private higher education can have, not only on personal success, but also on shaping communities and industries.”

The TICUA Hall of Fame, now in its fifth year, continues to highlight the contributions of alumni from Tennessee's 34 private nonprofit colleges and universities. These institutions have a longstanding history of educating individuals who go on to lead in fields ranging from business and education to public service and the arts.

TICUA Executive Leadership Institute 

Prepares the Next Generation of Higher-Ed Leaders

The Tennessee Independent Colleges and Universities Association Proudly Presents the 2024-25 Executive Leadership Institute Class

NASHVILLE, TN – The Tennessee Independent Colleges and Universities Association (TICUA) is proud to announce the start of its 2024-25 Executive Leadership Institute (ELI), bringing together 19 accomplished senior leaders from private and independent colleges across the state. Now in its eighth year, this nine-month program is recognized for its role in developing the next generation of higher education executives.

Reflecting on her own experience as an ELI participant, TICUA President Cameron Conn shared, “Having been a part of the 2023 ELI cohort, I know firsthand the transformative impact this program can have. It’s an opportunity for senior leaders to engage deeply with the challenges and opportunities facing our campuses today, and I’m excited to see this year’s Fellows take on that journey.”

Participants, known as Pressnell Fellows, are carefully selected by their respective college or university presidents to engage in this comprehensive leadership development experience.

The program offers an in-depth exploration of critical areas in higher education management, including Board Development, Strategic Planning, Advocacy, Student Success, Faculty Development, Communications, Finance, Leadership Transition and other key issues. Throughout the year, Fellows will collaborate with TICUA member presidents and subject matter experts to address real-world challenges through data-driven decision-making and collaborative strategies.

Over the years, ELI has become a significant stepping stone for many in Tennessee’s higher education landscape. Alumni have advanced to leadership positions, including presidencies at Johnson University, Bryan College, Lee University, Bethel University, and now, even TICUA itself.

Dr. Cameron Conn to Lead Tennessee Independent 

Colleges and Universities Association

Experienced Higher Education Leader to Succeed Dr. Claude Pressnell, Jr. as TICUA’s President

NASHVILLE – The Tennessee Independent Colleges and Universities Association (TICUA) Board of Directors is pleased to announce Dr. Cameron Conn as the association’s new president. Dr. Conn brings over 15 years of experience in higher education administration and will succeed Dr. Claude Pressnell, Jr., who is retiring after 28 years of service.

Dr. Conn, a native of Dyersburg, TN, served in numerous roles at Baptist Health Sciences University over the last six years and is currently the university’s Assistant Dean of Administration, Operations, and Services for the College of Osteopathic Medicine. During her tenure, she was instrumental in launching new programs and significantly contributed to the college's strategic planning, facilitating major accreditation processes, increasing enrollment, and securing substantial grants and partnerships.

"As a proud graduate of a TICUA institution and after serving in academic and student affairs roles within private higher education for the past 17 years, I am thrilled to have this opportunity to be a full-time champion for Tennessee independent colleges and universities," said Dr. Conn. "Our 34 member institutions have an outsize positive effect on Tennessee communities and provide the state with well-educated graduates who strengthen Tennessee’s workforce. I am excited to tell their stories and work to garner support for their work at the state and federal levels."

A long-time education advocate, Dr. Conn earned degrees from Union University and Florida State University before beginning her career in student services at Mississippi College and later transitioning to Baylor University. As Baylor's Assistant Dean for Undergraduate Curriculum and Student Affairs at the Robbins College of Health and Human Sciences, she played a central role in creating a new academic unit while chairing the Undergraduate Curriculum Committee and leading efforts to design and implement new degrees. 

"As the chair of the search committee, I was thrilled when I saw Dr. Conn’s name for consideration. Since meeting Dr. Conn several years ago, I have been impressed with her contributions and displayed leadership within higher education," said Chris Hulin, former Chair of the TICUA Board of Directors and President of Middle Tennessee School of Anesthesia. "The search committee was unanimous in our support for Dr. Conn to lead TICUA into this new chapter and I’m looking forward to what the future brings for Independent Colleges in Tennessee."

As an active quantitative researcher and peer reviewer, Dr. Conn has numerous publications and presentations on interests such as student-faculty interaction, college student outcomes, and Christian higher education. She holds a Doctor of Philosophy in higher education with a Doctoral Certificate in Strengths-Oriented Higher Education from Azusa Pacific University.

“Dr. Conn's proven track record of transformative leadership within higher education aligns very well with TICUA's mission,” said Eric Deaton, Vice Chair of the TICUA Board of Directors and Chief Operating Officer of Ballad Health. “As Vice Chair, I am confident that under her leadership, we will reach new heights and continue to achieve our mission with renewed vigor and innovation.”

"Working alongside Dr. Conn to advance independent institutions here in Tennessee will be an honor," added David Shannon, TICUA Chair and President of Freed-Hardeman University. "She brings a wealth of experience and perspective that we're excited to welcome to the team."

Dr. Conn is also a graduate of TICUA's Executive Leadership Institute (ELI), a 9-month program designed to prepare the next generation of leaders for executive roles in higher education. ELI participants, known as Pressnell Fellows, are selected by TICUA college presidents and many graduates have gone on to hold leadership positions at numerous Tennessee higher education institutions.

"TICUA has made significant progress on behalf of all Tennessee students over the past twenty-eight years and I think Dr. Conn will contribute greatly to the future progress as the next president," said Dr. Claude Pressnell, President of TICUA. “I'm thrilled to pass the role to someone so deeply rooted in what we do as a graduate of both a TICUA member institution and the TICUA Executive Leadership Institute.”

Dr. Claude Pressnell, Jr. to Retire 

After 28 Years of Service to Tennessee Higher Education

The Tennessee Independent Colleges and Universities Association President Has Worked with Nearly 160 College Presidents Throughout His Tenure

NASHVILLE – Dr. Claude Pressnell, Jr., President of the Tennessee Independent Colleges and Universities Association (TICUA), announced today that he will soon retire after 28 years representing Tennessee’s 34 private colleges and universities on a state and federal level. 

As a first-generation college student and Pell Grant recipient, Pressnell has dedicated his career to expanding access to higher education. Pressnell's leadership has played a key role in securing more than $1.5 billion in student aid to ensure Tennessee students have the financial support they need to attend the college that best fits their academic and social needs. 

“I appreciate Dr. Claude Pressnell's decades of service in higher education and commitment to ensuring the success of Tennessee students,” said Governor Bill Lee . “Maria and I congratulate Dr. Pressnell on his retirement and wish him the best in this new season." 

“Dr. Claude Pressnell's name is truly synonymous with higher education policy. He is a leader among leaders in this work and highly respected across Tennessee and the country,” said Candice McQueen, Ph.D., President, Lipscomb University, and TICUA board member. “Claude has served the TICUA presidents and our legislators with expertise and service that is truly second to none. We will miss his quick intuition and his depth of knowledge.” 

Pressnell’s collaborative efforts with nearly 160 Tennessee college presidents over the course of his career have shaped the state's educational landscape and positioned TICUA as a national advocate for independent colleges and universities. 

"Claude will be greatly missed. He's brought an insight into private colleges, and more importantly those students, to the legislature. He's developed strong relationships and I know we count on him for his integrity and honesty,” said Senate Education Committee Chairman, Senator Jon Lundberg (Bristol) .

In addition to his service to TICUA, the United States Senate appointed Pressnell to serve as Vice Chair on the Advisory Committee for Student Financial Assistance (ACSFA) from 2003 to 2008, during which he testified before Congress on higher education policy. 

In August of 2013, Governor Bill Haslam appointed Pressnell as a Commissioner representing the state’s interests on the Education Commission of the States (ECS), and in 2014, he was appointed by four U.S. Senators to serve on a committee to reduce the federal regulatory burden on higher education in the United States.

Pressnell currently chairs the National Advisory Committee on Institutional Quality and Integrity (NACIQI), providing recommendations on accrediting agencies monitoring the academic quality of postsecondary institutions and educational programs.

“During my visits to Capitol Hill, I am amazed by Dr. Pressnell’s ability to tell the Tennessee independent higher education story,” said Logan Hampton, President of Lane College . “As he speaks to members of the TN congressional delegation, Dr. Pressnell passionately weaves together an appeal for our collective support that includes the full diversity of our institutions. He knows our student bodies, our programs, and some of our faculty. He is our chief ambassador.” 

Pressnell has also guided higher education reform internationally in Southeast Europe, the Middle East, South America, and Central and South Asia. As a Fulbright Senior Specialist grant recipient in 2011, he contributed to the student financing policy adopted by the Maldivian Parliament. 

"It’s been an honor to represent Tennessee’s private colleges and universities for nearly three decades and I’m so proud of the progress we’ve been able to make on behalf of all Tennessee students," said Dr. Claude Pressnell, President of TICUA . “I could not have gone to college without financial aid. It made my liberal arts education possible and changed my life. We must allow everyone that same opportunity to achieve their goals.” 

TICUA will now begin the search for its next president. The TICUA Board of Directors is planning to welcome Pressnell's successor in late summer and has asked Pressnell to ensure a smooth transition.

Tennessee’s first female Speaker of the House, civil rights pioneer among the 24 honorees in the Class of 2023 

NASHVILLE, TENN. - The Tennessee Independent Colleges and Universities Association (TICUA) is proud to announce its fourth class of Hall of Fame inductees, honoring Tennessee’s first female Speaker of the House, a civil rights pioneer who integrated SEC varsity basketball, a world-renowned opera singer, music and business executives, and many others.

TICUA member institutions selected the 24 alumni, highlighting their contributions to our state, country, and world in a variety of disciplines. Tennessee’s Independent Colleges and Universities have helped shape some of our nation’s most distinguished and impressive citizens - from Nobel laureates and Pulitzer Prize winners to faith leaders, entrepreneurs, and elected officials. 

“With each new class of the TICUA Hall of Fame, we discover even more of our alumni changing the world, some whose names we know and others we are just now becoming familiar with,” said TICUA President Dr. Claude Pressnell. “Each of the inductees demonstrates how valuable one's college experience is to your life and the impact a liberal arts education has on molding your future.”

Honor Alumni in TICUA Hall of Fame 

NASHVILLE, Tenn. - The Tennessee Independent Colleges and Universities Association (TICUA) in partnership with the Hospital Alliance of Tennessee (HAT) awarded Freed-Hardeman University Junior Dominique Michaud with a nursing scholarship totaling $10,000. 

TICUA created the Hospital Alliance of Tennessee Nursing Scholarship to support outstanding nursing students seeking to complete their education in preparation for service in a Tennessee nonprofit hospital. Each of TICUA’s member institutions with nursing programs had the opportunity to nominate one highly qualified student to be considered for this scholarship. A selection committee made up of nonprofit hospital administrators weighed each applicant's letter of recommendation, essay, resume, and overall academic performance. 

“We are proud to name Dominique Michaud as our 2022 TICUA Hospital Association Nursing Scholar,” said TICUA President Claude Pressnell. “There were many qualified applicants and we saw an impressive commitment to the nursing profession from each applicant. As our nonprofit hospitals face a critical nursing shortage, it is an honor to be able to help students on their path to this incredibly important and noble profession.” 

Michaud, of Oxford, Mississippi,  is working toward a Bachelor of Science Degree in Nursing and is on track to graduate in May 2024. She has maintained a 4.0 grade point average throughout her academic career while also being active in campus organizations and volunteering to help those with mental and developmental disabilities. Michaud is a certified pharmacy technician, assistant in Disability Services, and American Red Cross Lifeguard, in addition to being certified in First Aid and CPR. 

“Nursing is described as an art and a science. I believe Dominique represents both very well,” said Christopher J. White, Chair of the Department of Nursing Freed-Hardeman University. “She is exceptional academically, and also, her compassion and desire to serve others shines through reflecting the art of Nursing. She  demonstrates a heart for serving others in need.” 

Michaud chose to pursue nursing to make a difference in her community. She feels it is a calling to be an advocate for people in their most vulnerable times and to help patients medically, emotionally, and mentally.

NASHVILLE, TN. - (November 15, 2021) – Distinguished Attorney, Eugene W. Ward, was inducted into the Tennessee Independent Colleges and Universities Association Hall of Fame and selected by his alma mater Lincoln Memorial University on Saturday, November 13 by TICUA President - Dr. Claude O. Pressnell and LMU President - Dr. Clayton Hess. Ward holds a Bachelor of Science degree in Business Administration from LMU and a Juris Doctor degree from the University of Tennessee. He was selected for his accomplishments of being a distinguished attorney, leader of one of the nation's largest utilities - Nashville Electric Service (NES) as well as his continued devotion to being a dedicated Community servant. The Tennessee Independent Colleges and Universities Association (TICUA) and its member institutions selected 24 alumni, highlighting their contributions in a variety of disciplines. “We launched the TICUA Hall of Fame last year to honor the accomplishments and impact of graduates and the institutions who helped to prepare them,” TICUA President Dr. Claude Pressnell stated. “We are proud to recognize Eugene W. Ward who has made significant contributions to his institutions, community, and society.”

"Gene embodies Lincoln Memorial University's mission of service by his persistent pursuit of helping others. Whether Gene was in the courtroom, on Capitol Hill, raising his family, or working on behalf of LMU for recruiting and promotion, he has always been selfless in his concern and welfare for others," stated LMU President - Dr. Clayton Hess. 

Gene Ward expressed, "It is indeed an honor to be inducted into the TICUA Hall of Fame, and to be representing such a great institution as Lincoln Memorial University. Without LMU, I would never have been able to achieve these accomplishments".

About Eugene Ward:
Eugene Ward embodies Lincoln Memorial University's (LMU) mission of service by his persistent pursuit of helping others. Whether in the courtroom, on Capitol Hill, raising his family, or working on behalf of LMU for recruiting and promotion, Ward is selfless in his concern and welfare for others.
Born in White Pine in Jefferson County, Tennessee, on September 28, 1932, Ward was orphaned at age six and raised by his grandmother. He excelled in high school and took particular interest in debate and sports teams and earned a spot at LMU to study business. He paid his way through college by working at a dairy farm and waiting tables at the school’s dining hall. After graduating with honors, he earned an academic scholarship to University of Tennessee College of Law and graduated in 1959.
After working in private practice for several years, he was appointed assistant general counsel and later general counsel for the Tennessee Public Service Commission. He served from January 1966 through May 1980. Ward wrote the rules of the Public Service Commission and most statutes between 1961 and 1980 and helped draft the Underground Utility Prevention Act. Ward was appointed as administrative Law Judge and ruled on more than 400 commission cases.
In March 1986, Nashville Electric Service (NES), one of the largest 12 utilities in the nation, appointed him general counsel where he headed the legal department. He represented NES in governmental affairs before the General Assembly of Tennessee and the United States Congress until his retirement in 2010 after thirty years of service to the utility.
Outside of the courtroom, Ward dedicates his life to helping others through his church and community organizations, earning numerous awards for his philanthropic work. In 1976, the Tennessee General Assembly named the bridge at I-81 mile marker 4 the Eugene “Mose” Ward Overpass. In 2005, he became a member of Lincoln Memorial University's Professional Hall of Fame.
Ward is married to Grammy Award winner and Grand Ole Opry member Jeannie Seely.

Announces Second TICUA Hall of Fame Class

24 Inductees from Tennessee Independent Colleges and Universities Honored in 2021 Class

NASHVILLE, TENN. - The Tennessee Independent Colleges and Universities Association (TICUA) is proud to announce its second class of Hall of Fame inductees. TICUA and its member institutions have proudly selected  24 alumni, highlighting their contributions to our state, country and world in a variety of disciplines.

“We launched the TICUA Hall of Fame last year to honor the accomplishments and impact of graduates and the institutions who helped to prepare them,” said TICUA President Dr. Claude Pressnell. “We are proud to once again recognize an astounding group of alumni who have made significant contributions to their institutions, communities, and society. Their stories are worthy of recognition and accolade and, on behalf of our member institutions, we are proud to offer this small token of our appreciation for their achievements.”

The 2021 class of inductees includes civil rights and women’s rights activists; veterans; civic and faith leaders; news, entertainment, and business professionals; and passionate philanthropic and humanitarian leaders, all hailing from Tennessee private non-profit institutions.

Dr. C.T. Vivian, a 1960 graduate of American Baptist College, is one of the civil rights leaders recognized in this year’s class. He earned a Presidential Medal of Freedom for his work alongside Martin Luther King, Jr., leading boycotts and marches across the South. Though he was arrested, jailed, and beaten many times, Dr. Vivian remained a disciplined advocate for nonviolent resistance. “Even as nonviolence forced us to risk our lives for the changes we desired,” Dr. Vivian said, “that risk itself made our lives more worth living.”

Yolande Cornelia “Nikki” Giovanni is considered one of America’s foremost and widely-read American poets and an outspoken civil rights activist. A 1967 Fisk University, she often returns to campus to engage, teach, and mentor Fisk students—including a semester tenure as a visiting distinguished professor.

Joe Birch accepted an internship with WMC Action News 5 in Memphis while a student at Christian Brothers University. In 1978, he accepted a full-time job offer on the day he graduated and just five years later became the station’s news anchor, where he still serves today. Birch is an Emmy Award winning journalist and a member of the Tennessee Journalism Hall of Fame.

The COVID-19 pandemic has overwhelmed much of our nation’s healthcare systems. But, under the leadership of Southern Adventist University graduate and CEO Terry Shaw, AdventHealth developed a program to redeploy clinical and non-clinical staff from low demand areas within its 50-hospital and 1,200 healthcare site network into areas experiencing higher demand. At its height, the organization was able to redeploy more than 1,800 team members per day. Shaw’s innovative leadership helped address staff needs in busier areas, minimize staff redundancies, and undoubtedly save lives.

Tennessee Independent Colleges and Universities Honor Alumni in 

the Inaugural Class of the TICUA Hall of Fame

Civil Rights Icon John Lewis, Presidential Biographer Jon Meacham among the 24 honorees in 

the Class of 2020

NASHVILLE, TENN. - Tennessee’s Independent Colleges and Universities have helped shape some of our nation’s most distinguished and impressive citizens - from Nobel laureates and Pulitzer Prize winners to faith leaders, entrepreneurs, and elected officials. 

The Tennessee Independent Colleges and Universities Association (TICUA) created the TICUA Hall of Fame to honor the distinguished alumni of its 35 member institutions while highlighting their contributions to our state, nation, and world.

“The inaugural class of the TICUA Hall of Fame features a diverse and incredibly impressive group of citizens that our institutions have helped prepare,” said TICUA President Claude Pressnell, “While you will recognize many of the names, all of these alumni have made significant contributions worth learning about. We are proud to be able to give them just a small portion of the recognition they deserve.” 

For example, American Baptist College selected Congressman John Lewis on behalf of their campus before his passing in July 2020. Lewis was an alumni of two TICUA Institutions: American Baptist College and Fisk University.

“John Lewis came to American Baptist College at just 17- years-old. He credited his education 

at American Baptist College for helping to mold him into the passionate leader he became,” said Forrest E. Harris, Sr., President of American Baptist College. “There is no better time to honor Lewis’ life and legacy and we are grateful TICUA is recognizing his indelible contributions to our country.”

TICUA Prepares Campus Leaders for Success

Nashville, TN— This month, thirty-four leaders from Tennessee’s private colleges and universities gathered for TICUA’s Advancing Leaders, an intensive workshop to develop and prepare future senior campus leaders for success in an ever-changing higher education environment.

“Strong, effective campus leaders help ensure that our colleges are serving students well, so TICUA created this program to provide advancing campus leaders an opportunity to gain the skills and knowledge they need to be successful now and in the future,” said TICUA President Dr. Claude Pressnell. “Because TICUA institution presidents select officials from their campuses to participate in the Advancing Leaders program, Tennessee’s private colleges and universities are leading the way to develop higher education leaders who will carry the mantle of postsecondary choice and student success forward.”

Since launching in 2015, around 200 people have participated in the annual leadership training.

“I often make plans or develop strategies based on what I think the institution I serve can or can’t do, but the Advancing Leaders program helped me see beyond that horizon and get excited about the new destination of possibilities,” said Eric Ballah, Director of Development at Maryville College. “I also gained a greater appreciation for TICUA for intentionally investing in individuals, as well as private higher education in Tennessee.”

“The Advancing Leaders program helped expand my overall knowledge of the higher education landscape, and supported my understanding of the qualities and skills essential for effective campus leadership teams,” said Cheryl Slay Carr, Associate Dean and Associate Professor at Belmont University’s Curb College of Entertainment & Music Business. “After completing the program, I feel I have a clearer vision for how to leverage my strengths and experiences to serve my campus and students.”

Presidents of TICUA member campuses select Advancing Leaders to participate in the two-day intensive workshop, which happens over the summer each year. Developed in partnership with experts at higher education consulting firm Credo, the workshop provides next-generation leaders with the opportunity to better understand:

• State and national policy context for private higher education

• Campus partnerships

• Drivers for institutional health

• Challenges for higher-education leaders

• Steps to prepare for a leadership role

At the conclusion of each workshop, participants build a personalized roadmap to apply what they have learned to their role and institution and prepare for an expanded leadership role.

Future Higher-Ed Leaders Prepared to Build Healthy Campuses and Foster Student Success

Nashville, TN— This month, twenty senior officials from private and independent colleges across the state graduated from the third cohort of TICUA’s Executive Leadership Institute, an innovative leadership development program to prepare university leaders with the knowledge and skills they need to build healthy campuses and serve students.

“Tennessee’s colleges and universities are some of our most important resources for the continuing success of our economy and citizenry, and those stepping into executive roles must be prepared to lead,” said Claude Pressnell, President of TICUA. “With several colleges and universities experiencing leadership transitions in the last few years, it is more important than ever to invest in these leaders and help ensure they continue to thrive and serve our students and state well.”

The nine-month program is designed to strengthen campus leadership teams and prepare the next generation of leaders for college or university executive roles. ELI participants, known as Presnnell Fellows, are selected by their institution’s president to participate.

The 2019 Class of Pressnell Fellows marks the third class graduating from ELI, and in just three years of cohorts, ELI graduates have gone on to serve in leadership positions at Tennessee higher education institutions including the presidency of Johnson University, and interim presidencies at Martin Methodist University and Carson-Newman University.

“ELI was a great opportunity to meet and collaborate with my colleagues from across the state,” said Robby Shelton, Executive Vice President and Chief Operating Officer at Martin Methodist University. “While the Fellows came from diverse campuses and backgrounds, the Institute enabled all of us to step outside our normal silos and think through broader challenges and opportunities that affect higher education. Because of this experience, we have an entire network of friends to call on, no matter where we go from here.”

"I am a better administrator, leader, and person because of TICUA’s Executive Leadership Institute," said Phil Cook, Vice President for Enrollment at Lee University. "Each topic we covered is critical to the success of our institutions, careers, and the academy. What I will remember most, however, is the stories, examples, and personal insights offered to us by each residential dean. The narratives shared by each chancellor or president were informative, encouraging, and motivating. I left each session impressed by the various strengths, personalities, and vision of these exemplary leaders."

During the course of the year-long program, the ELI Pressnell Fellows gain training and insight on key issues related to leading a higher education institution today including, institutional governance, educational policy and politics, strategic planning, friend- and fund-raising, public relations, internal and external communications, enrollment management, academics and faculty relations, and financial management.

In each of these areas, Fellows have the opportunity to learn from content experts and sitting TICUA member presidents and to explore solutions to campus-specific questions, problems, issues, or challenges utilizing data-driven decision-making.

Tennessee’s Private Colleges and Universities

Keep Tuition Affordable

Nashville, TN— Students attending Tennessee’s private non-profit colleges and universities will continue to pay thousands of dollars less than students attending similar institutions in other states.  Members of the Tennessee Independent Colleges and Universities Association (TICUA), just announced a modest increase in tuition and fees next year. Undergraduate tuition and fees for 2019-20 will increase by an average of 3.55%; among the lowest over the past decade.

“TICUA institutions are steadfast in their commitment to educational opportunity and choice,” said Dr. Claude Pressnell, President of the Tennessee Independent Colleges and Universities Association. “Our institutions are far more affordable than most think. Our members provide generous financial aid, making it possible for students to attend the college or university that best fits their individual needs.”

This past month the Tennessee General Assembly provided $64 million in new funds for the State’s public colleges and universities.  This additional funding enabled the Tennessee Higher Education Commission to keep the public tuition increase capped at 2.5%. The nominal increases among Tennessee’s private and public colleges and universities allow Tennessee to remain a low-tuition and low-student loan state.

While TICUA campuses face the rising cost of employee benefits, implementation of federal regulations and make investments to meet the changing needs of students, they are devoted to providing more student financial aid for qualified students to ensure that a private college education remains affordable. The increase in student aid is consistent with their mission to make college affordable for all qualified students seeking admission.

“Nearly every student attending a TICUA member campus receives some form of financial aid,” said Pressnell. “Because the State-scholarship dollars follow the student, Tennesseans are able to use HOPE, Promise and Reconnect scholarships to attend whichever institution best fits their needs, including many TICUA institutions. So when you combine institutional, state, and federal aid, the actual price paid by students can be substantially lower than the published price.”

Key facts about TICUA institutions and student aid:

• Over 90% of first-time, full-time students attending a TICUA campus receive some form of financial support.

• The majority (80%) of this aid comes directly from the campuses. The State of Tennessee provides another 10% and the federal government the remaining 10% of the aid.

• Each year, thousands of Tennesseans attending TICUA member institutions also benefit from State scholarship aid programs, including the HOPE scholarship, Tennessee Promise and Reconnect and need-based Tennessee Student Assistance Award.

• Only 56% of graduating seniors at Tennessee’s private, non-profit institutions took out a loan for their degree.

• During the academic year 2016-17, graduating seniors at TICUA member institutions borrowed on average about $28,208 for their bachelor’s degree.  This is only about $4,000 more than if they had attended a Tennessee public university

For academic year 2019-20, the average published tuition and fees for undergraduate students attending a TICUA member campus will be $27,866 per year. This is considerably lower than the national average. Last year (academic year 2018-19), average tuition at Tennessee’s private, non-profit, four-year institutions was 26% less than the national average.

The degrees were conferred during the most recent 2017-2018 academic period. The largest increases were with associate, doctoral, and first professional degrees.  The increase in associate degrees is largely due to students using the Tennessee Promise Scholarship at eligible TICUA campuses.  Even though there was a slight decrease in bachelors and masters degrees, they remain the largest number of degrees awarded overall.

The most popular degrees continue to be in health care, business, criminal justice and biology.  More than 2,500 degrees were awarded in the STEM or technical fields as defined by the US Department of Homeland Security.  “Our goal is to produce graduates with portable skills that are relevant to a variety of careers and who are deeply engaged in serving society,” said TICUA President, Claude Pressnell.

TICUA member campuses represent just over a quarter of the higher education enrollment in Tennessee but award 34% of the degrees.  The University of Tennessee System awards 18% of the degrees, the public Locally Governed Universities (formerly the TN Board of Regents universities) award 31%, and the community colleges award the remaining 17%. 

Over 30% of the degrees were awarded to students who transferred into one of the TICUA member colleges and universities.  Pressnell stated, “Tennessee’s private colleges continue to be a popular high-quality option for students to complete their degrees after starting at another campus.  Once in-transfer students arrive, they tend to graduate at a similar rate as the students who began their studies on campus.”

Adult students also perform well at Tennessee’s private colleges.  Over 30% of this year’s degrees were awarded to students age 25 and over.  The most popular degrees awarded to adult learners included business, health related fields, and criminal justice.  It is anticipated that adult degrees will continue to increase with the advent of the state’s TN Reconnect program which provides student aid to adults seeking an associate degree.

Tennessee’s private colleges are committed to assisting the State in attaining Governor Bill Haslam’s Drive to 55 goal of having 55% of Tennesseans with a post-secondary credential by 2025.  To date, TICUA member campuses are awarding more degrees each year than predicted by the state.  “Our campuses have always played a key role in helping the state achieve its higher education and workforce goals,” commented Pressnell.  “We stand ready to assist the next Governor in making Tennessee one of the most attractive places for high quality corporations to locate and flourish.”

• The State’s need-based aid program, (Tennessee Student Assistance Award), currently provides over $30 million to 8,000 low-income students attending TICUA member institutions.
• Thousands of TICUA member institution students also benefit from the State’s HOPE lottery scholarship program. In the 2017-18 academic year, over 12,500 students attending private colleges and universities received more than $52 million in scholarship aid. 

Remarkably, only 56% of graduating seniors at Tennessee’s private, non-profit institutions took out a loan for their degree. During the academic year 2015-16, graduating seniors at TICUA member institutions borrowed on average about $28,410 for their bachelor’s degree.  This is only about $2,000 more than if they had attended a Tennessee public university and its less than the cost of a new car.

“It is important to recognize that nearly every student attending a TICUA member campus receives some form of financial aid,” said Pressnell. “When you combine institutional, state, and federal aid, the actual price paid by students can be substantially lower than the published price.”

Pressnell spent time with corporate leaders from the gas, oil, and telecommunication industries to learn about the hard and soft skills expected from their employees.  He then worked with Iraqi university presidents and faculty to develop ways to address the skill-gaps that the corporate representatives identified, particularly skill gaps in key skill areas such as critical thinking, English language skills, and work ethic.

During Pressnell’s work in Basra, he worked with US Embassy personnel to address the gas and oil partners of southern Iraq.  University officials and corporate leaders met at the US Consulate for the first time to seek ways to enhance the higher education environment in Iraq. The regional meeting was attended by corporate leaders and university presidents and faculty from the Southern region of Iraq.

The work in Baghdad was the first convening of the national-level Iraqi Industry Advisory Board.  Members include the Iraqi Minister of Higher Education, Minister of Youth, Minister of Labor and Minister of Education as well as CEOs of the major oil, gas, and telecommunications companies and representatives of the regional universities. The goal of the Industry Advisory Boards is to establish a common vocabulary between to higher education and industry, create a system of shared goals, and to develop strong, sustainable linkages between Iraqi government bodies, higher education institutions, and the private sector to provide academic programs responsive to industry and workforce needs.

“The first ever convening of the IAB in Baghdad was an exciting venture,” commented Pressnell.  “There was a tremendous amount of openness and candor along with a willingness to embrace change.  Government officials and industry leaders joined together expressing a commitment to creating a strong workforce and diversified economy for the future of Iraq.”

Pressnell used his work in Tennessee to inform his work in Iraq. Pressnell will now bring the lessons he learned in Iraq back to apply to his work in the higher education sector in Tennessee. Tennessee is faced with many of the same issues around creating a shared value system between local business and industries and regional education providers to provide the workforce that state needs.

This is the fourth time that Pressnell has been chosen by the U.S. Senate for service.  In 2003 he was appointed by then U.S. Senate Majority Leader Bill Frist to serve on the Federal Advisory Committee for Student Financial Aid (ACSFA).  Pressnell was chosen to serve a second term on the ACSFA in 2006 and was elected Vice Chair in 2007.  More recently, in 2014, a bi-partisan group of U.S, Senators, headed by U.S. Senator Lamar Alexander selected Pressnell to serve on a task force to recommend a pathway to reduce the federal regulatory burden on higher education in the United States.

NACIQI is authorized by the Higher Education Opportunity Act to provide recommendations to the U.S. Department of Education on matters concerning accreditation of postsecondary institutions and educational programs, including institutional eligibility for federal student aid. Six members of NACIQI are appointed by the Secretary of Education, six by the House of Representatives and six by the Senate.

Pressnell said, “My primary hope for the committee is to strengthen the peer-review system in order to ensure that accreditors are accomplishing their mission and purpose with a primary focus on student success and institutional quality.”

Pressnell will serve a six-year term that ends in 2022.
